About us

About us

Why are we different?

For some school pupils, being naturally gifted in maths and science subjects can set them apart for the wrong reasons. A specialist Maths School, like Lancaster University School of Mathematics, brings together these talented individuals. It creates a vibrant community where they are actively encouraged to explore the subjects they love. The curriculum is broader and deeper than the standard A-Level syllabus, providing a more stretching and inspiring education.

Our Ethos

Our mission is to enable the ablest mathematicians from all backgrounds to realise their potential within an inspiring, inclusive and supportive learning community.

The Lancaster University School of Mathematics offers able young people within the surrounding areas access to world-class preparation for entry into mathematics-based university education at a standard which is unavailable within the mainstream state school system.

The Maths School is a centre of excellence and shares best practices throughout the region, raising achievement and aspirations for all. A substantial outreach programme is offered to local schools, with activities ranging from master classes and teacher INSET to mentoring individuals and sharing online resources.

U-Maths

Specialist Maths Schools are supported by the Department for Education (DfE) and have an extensive outreach programme to support maths education in surrounding schools and to widen participation for mathematically able students from disadvantaged backgrounds to fulfil their potential.

U-Maths is the collective group of 7 Maths Schools around the country, all linked to top universities, and as we share common goals, we also share best practice.

Student President Testimonial

Coming to LUSoM means being surrounded by maths everyday! This has enabled us to create a community built around pursuing maths but more importantly, a community built on a love for maths. It has also given me the opportunity to do everything from most recently a trip to Geneva to see CERN, every maths competition you can think of, university level lectures, trips to Lancaster University and most importantly our table tennis table and whiteboards!
