Maths School celebrates record number of A* grades and girls’ performance

Lancaster University School of Mathematics students were celebrating their results this year with a record number of A* grades. A third of all the A-levels were given the top grade, and 80% were graded A*-B. A third of the students got all A* & A grades.

 

Head of School, Pete Tiltman, said “We’re absolutely delighted with another set of incredible results. This year group have worked exceptionally hard and allied with their work ethic they have fully embraced our curriculum which has taken them well above and beyond their A-levels, giving them some incredible opportunities to go on to top universities, including Oxbridge and our partner Lancaster University or on to competitive degree apprenticeships with BAE and Rolls-Royce amongst others.”

 

The school were also celebrating the fact that the girls outperformed the boys, which is contrary to the national picture, and a real success for a school with ambitions to increase girls’ participation in STEM. Pete Tiltman added “It is fantastic that the girls are doing so well in subjects which are dominated by the boys at a national level. It is testament to the different type of teaching we offer here at LUSoM, focussing on teamwork, collaboration and projects, developing the skills these students will need when they go into the workplace.”
