LUSoM celebrates first A level results

Lancaster University School of Mathematics, based on London Road in Preston, which opened its doors in September 2022 were celebrating their first set of A-level results today.

An amazing 85% of all the A-level grades were A*-B, with 65% being A*/A grades and an incredible 30% of all grades being A*.

The Head of School, Pete Tiltman, was absolutely delighted with the results. ‘It is a real testament to the hard work of staff and students to come out with these fantastic results. We pride ourselves on taking the students beyond the A-level curriculum, and they have all participated in group projects as well as completing their own individual projects, working with academic staff from Lancaster University and experiencing a wide range of guest speakers. The destinations which the students will go onto – highly prestigious universities and degree apprenticeships – mean that they will all have hugely successful careers in STEM.

Being our first cohort, the students took a risk, picking the school when there wasn’t even a building or staff member, just sold on the idea of a maths school. We’re delighted that their decision has paid off.’

The first cohort numbered just thirty-two students, two of which are off to Cambridge and Oxford Universities, and two more will move on to degree apprenticeships with Dyson and BAE. Other students will progress to study degrees at highly prestigious universities in STEM subjects such as Maths, Engineering and Computer Science.

LUSoM is a collaboration between two outstanding education providers, Lancaster University, which is consistently ranked among the best universities in the UK and top 15 in national league tables, and Cardinal Newman College, one of the highest performing Sixth Form Colleges nationally, based on A-Level progress.
